New Michigan K-12 Science Standards

Last week we went to a presentation about the new science standards that could soon be seen in Michigan, and nationally, in the near future. Compared to how I learned science in school, these standards would really change the way kids are learning. There is so much more experimentation and inquiry involved, which I think is great. I think that these standards would really help prepare students to go to college and continue to be successful in the real world. Since they want to integrate engineering, I think we will start to get more students into that field. It's kind of scary to think about how different science in schools would be, but one of the presenters made a comment that made me think, it was something like, "Nobody likes change, but change is inevitable in this world". I definitely don't like change, but that is such a true comment. We need to change and adapt and make the future generations ready to go out into the world. So, I think that these standards would be a good idea to adapt.

  1. What you can do as a new teacher is to help the "old folks" teaching with the changes. Sometimes it takes a little new positive attitude to help them along. Don't let them bring you back to their way, encourage them to try the new way.
