A: Science is the study of natural and physical topics through experimentation and observation. The study of science couldn't get started until people let go of a supernaturalism way of thinking.
Q: Isn't most of what we know about the universe and world just a theory, not a fact? (Explain what is theory and what is fact in terms of the general population.)
A: Yes, most of what we know about the universe and world is just a theory. A theory is a set of ideas that are trying to explain something. A theory has gone under extensive research and testing over decades, but can still include facts. As new knowledge is gained, a theory can change. A fact is an observation that has been repeatedly confirmed. Most of what we know about the universe hasn't been confirmed, it is all a theory that is still being tested.
A: Anthropomorphic climate change says that human activity is causing greenhouse gases leading to global warming. I believe that this is science because scientists have been doing lots of research and testing to prove this theory. Recently, there have been more and more carbon emissions and scientists agree that global warming is being caused by humans.
Q: What is the young Earth theory, is it science?
A: The young Earth theory says that the Universe, Earth and life were all created by God during a relatively short time period. The Bible says that Earth was created in six, 24 hour days. This is not science. Like Intelligent design, it cannot be tested. And from the testing that has been done having to do with evolution, we have found that the universe is much much older than the young Earth theory claims.
Q: What is intelligent design, is it science?
A: Intelligent design is a claim that evolution can't explain things and basically that God designed everything. No, it is not science because a claim isn't tested. Eugenie Scott explained how natural claims are the only ones we can test, you cannot control the acts of God. Evolution can be tested, and has been tested and is a very good theory of how we came to be.
Q: What is the theory of fossil succession, is it science?
A: The theory of fossil succession says that the kids of plants and animals found in fossils changes over time. When the same kinds of fossils are found in rocks in different places, the rocks are the same age. I think that this would be science. This theory is tested because fossil succession shows evolution. Plants and animals have changed over time to adapt to change.
Q: Can a person accept principles of the Nature of Science and still believe in religion or have faith?
A: Yes, a person can still say God is a part of things for example, providing the first cell or helping us get through hard times. As a spiritual person, I know that I have a hard time connecting the two. I believe in God, but I still believe in science too. Listening to Ken Miller, I understand where he is coming from when he talks about how spiritual people can still acknowledge that supernatural forces are there and above our capacity to interpret.
Q: Where and/or what is the power of science?
A. Science is a very powerful thing. It tries to explain things through experimentation that we normally wouldn't think or try to explain. The power of science is in experimentation. When we experiment, we can explain how things happen. As we gain more knowledge, our ways of experimenting could change but that just takes us closer to how things actually work.
